Precision grinding

In CNC grinding, we produce high-precision ground parts with tolerances below 0.001 mm and reproducible quality in series production.

Using state-of-the-art CNC circular grinding technology, we manufacture high-precision components in the micrometre range. Our processes enable tolerances below 1 µm. They run reliably and are fully reproducible. Automated workflows, seamless process control and many years of grinding expertise ensure consistently high quality in our 24/7 series production. This results in precise and reliable grinding operations that meet the most demanding requirements.

The most important points

  • CNC circular grinding of internal and external diameters.
  • Tolerance range: below 1 µm, depending on material and geometry

Precision grinding expertise at Polymeca

Polymeca has extensive expertise in CNC grinding and has been one of the specialists for high-precision grinding operations for many years. Our long-standing experience in manufacturing axis systems for high-precision geodetic instruments such as theodolites and laser scanners has continuously refined and technologically advanced our processes. Through consistent process development, we achieve tolerances of up to 1 µm in match grinding. In internal and external circular grinding, we typically produce series parts with tolerances of 0.5 to 3 µm. Our processes are stable, reproducible and demonstrably reliable.

Precision grinding processes

  • Internal and external circular grinding
  • Thread grinding for maximum profile accuracy
  • Non-circular grinding (e.g. eccentric grinding, cam disc grinding) for complex geometries
  • Shoe grinding for thin-walled components
  • Honing for the precise finishing of demanding bores

This diversity enables us to manufacture highly complex components efficiently and reproducibly. We process a wide range of demanding materials. All processes are designed to ensure that material characteristics, temperature control and surface finish requirements are optimally co-ordinated.

Use of CNC universal circular grinding machine

During CNC grinding, we manufacture your components in an air-conditioned and highly automated production environment using modern CNC universal circular grinding machines. These machines feature functions such as trend analysis and automatic correction. Combined with advanced robotic automation, they enable efficient production, high flexibility and consistently high component quality.

This makes us a reliable partner for high-precision and cost-effectively manufactured grinding components in medium to large batch sizes. Our minimally staffed, 24/7 operation ensures high availability and cost-effective series production, even in the face of international competition.

Quality assurance and documented test results

Our measurement technology guarantees that every precision-ground part meets the required dimensional accuracy and quality standards, from the first part to the last. From process release to final inspection, we document all measurement results on high-precision Hexagon coordinate measuring machines.

We continuously monitor process stability, either directly at the machine or in climate-controlled measuring rooms. This ensures reproducible, documented precision and reliable quality.

Frequently asked questions about precision grinding

What is meant by precision grinding?
Precision grinding is a highly accurate process of fine machining. Workpieces are manufactured with extremely tight tolerances and very high surface quality. The process is among the most precise machining technologies and enables stable processes with the highest requirements for dimensional, form and positional tolerances as well as for the finest surfaces.
What tolerances are possible in precision grinding?
Precision grinding achieves dimensional, form and positional tolerances in the micrometre range, often between 0.5 and 3 µm, sometimes even lower. Fine-grained grinding wheels and optimised process parameters result in very smooth and homogeneous surfaces, often with roughness values below Ra 0.2 µm.
What component sizes can be manufactured?
We machine precision components with diameters from Ø 10 to Ø 200 mm and lengths up to a maximum of 300 mm. Depending on the application, the workpiece is held in place by a round magnet, a chuck, or between centres.
How do you ensure quality in the series?
We ensure series quality through in-process tests, documented measurement results and continuous monitoring of all manufacturing processes with highly accurate measuring and testing equipment.

Surface technology and surface finishing

Following precision grinding, surface technology can be offered as the next process step, if desired, for the targeted surface finishing of your components. Using a variety of methods, we meet defined requirements for function, protection and appearance, ensuring the operational readiness of your precision-ground parts.
